Updating the name on your NZ driver’s licence
To change the name listed on your driver’s licence, you will first need to change your legal name. For details on how to do this, you can see our guide.
After you have done this, you simply need to apply for a new licence. This can either be done online with RealMe, or by filling out a form at any licensing agency. In 2022 the cost is $38.20.
All applications for a new license require “proof of identity.” If you have changed your name since your last licence was issued, you will also need to show proof of the name change. If your birth certificate has not had the sex marker changed since you changed your name, it will show your current and previous names which is enough. If you have changed both your sex marker and your name, then your birth certificate will only show your current name, which means you will need to provide proof of name change instead which can be ordered from Department of Internal Affairs.
“Proof of identity” means you will also have to provide a photo ID, for example your current driver’s licence or passport.
The form also has a section where you enter your gender. This is an open text box, so you can add whatever descriptor fits you best and they will update your details in the system to whatever you put. You do not need proof for this. You also have the option to get a new photo for your licence, and to change the signature displayed on it.
Updating the sex marker in the NZTA system
Changing the sex marker that New Zealand Transport Authority has on file does not require you to have changed the sex marker on your birth certificate or passport, or to provide any other proof. Driver’s licences do not display any sex marker, regardless of what it says in their system.
There are two ways to do this:
You can list the new gender you want on the form when you apply for a new licence. This can either be done online with RealMe, or by filling out a form at any licensing agency. In 2022 it will cost $38.20. You will still need “proof of identity” like for a normal new license application.
Or,
You can update the sex marker on file without needing to replace your licence, this can be done by phoning 0800 822 422, and they can update your gender over the phone with some security checks to make sure you are the actual licence holder.
