Peer support
If you need information and support, you can contact us to speak with a transgender peer. We are professional advocates, and can offer you accurate, up to date information on a wide range of topics.
Find out what works well for other trans people, and get connected with practical supports.
Social events
If you want to meet other trans people and make friends, we run social events in person – including monthly sober social meetups in Wellington, and other events throughout the year. Come along and make new friends!
Online peer-to-peer support group
We run NZ’s biggest online peer-to-peer infoshare forum Transgender and Intersex NZ, for trans and intersex folks, their families, and supporters – with over 2,000 NZ based members. Join the community.
Other ways to get involved
There are heaps of opportunities to join our amazing volunteer community, or get involved in another way…
Community support groups
Many transgender-led community groups exist across the regions – they range from social coffee meetup groups to formal support organisations.
Most of the groups listed on our Community Support database are not run by Gender Minorities Aotearoa. Some come and go quickly, so there may be groups which we aren’t on our database yet, and there may be links to some which no longer exist. Contact them directly to find out more about them.
Add a community support group
If you know of a transgender-led social group or support organisation which is not listed on our database, please add it! We update our databases at least quarterly, but please note that entries are moderated so it won’t show up straight away. You are also welcome to use our Transgender and Intersex NZ group to let people know about it.
Start a group in your town
Setting up a group takes good planning, and can take a while to get established. Most groups start out with a meetup or event. You can find our checklist for running a fundraising event for GMA below, and we can help you spread the word. Or, you can use it to organise a purely social meetup. You are welcome to use our Transgender and Intersex NZ group to tell people about your event.
